PRP Injections For Joint Pain

If you suffer from joint pain, all you can really concentrate on is finding relief from the pain. Medication and physical therapy may provide temporary relief, but they rarely address the root causes of the discomfort and debilitating pain that cause such a disruption in your daily life.

Simply masking the symptoms is not going to bring true freedom from joint pain and cannot give you the quality of life you deserve, but luckily there are treatments that can address the root causes of the pain without invasive procedures or potentially addictive pain medication.

Types of Joint Pain

Joint pain is predominantly caused by inflammation due to tissue damage inside of the joint itself. This damage can take several forms and can have several root causes:

  • Injury-based pain: many pains in our joints come from repetitive stress or sports or activity-related injuries. Tendons and ligaments can be torn, sprained, or strained, causing inflammation in and around the joint, and the resulting nerve pain can be debilitating and excruciating.
  • Osteoarthritis: The cartilage within joints can wear down over time in the case of osteoarthritis, causing intense pain, swelling, and immobility in the joints.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: While osteoarthritis is commonly thought of as a disease of aging and wear and tear on the body, rheumatoid arthritis is largely understood to be a result of an autoimmune problem. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis, the body is attacking its own tissues, with similar results within the affected joints.
  • Bursitis and Gout: Other diseases can attack the cushioning sacs within the joints (bursitis) or cause intense pain when uric acid crystalline structures attack and damage nerves within the joints (gout).

These diseases and injuries lead to the same inflammation, immobility, and pain problems, making almost all normal daily activity anything from an uncomfortable chore to an impossibility.

Treating Joint Pain With PRP Therapy

Fortunately, at Pollack Health and Wellness Center, we have treatments that can address these root problems of tissue damage that cause the symptoms of joint pain. One of these treatments is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections.

In this procedure, the patient has blood drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the blood components, which creates a concentrated solution of platelets. The solution is then injected into the site of the joint pain. Because the platelets encourage regrowth and renewal of tissues and cells within your body, a concentrated dose of them in damaged areas can send messages to the cells to heal and allow the body to recover faster.

Once the root causes of the inflammation have been addressed through this treatment, the pain, swelling, and immobility associated with the tissue damage ease. Instead of taking medication to mask the pain caused by the damage, PRP therapy addresses the damage itself, letting the body free itself from the pain and lack of range of motion, restoring a better quality of life.
